Community ambassadors improving safety in Gosport

New community ambassadors are out in Gosport town centre reducing anti-social behaviour.

The ambassadors are out each day of the week patrolling The Falkland Gardens and the town centre. Their role is to improve safety for residents and businesses and to proactively engage with the community.

The ambassadors are employed by Gosport Borough Council through funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner. The scheme is aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour while working alongside police officers, who retain responsibility for responding to crimes and emergencies.

Recent partnership activity in the town has included homeless support, stop and searches, dispersal orders, criminal behaviour orders, environmental audits and partner patrols.

Council Leader Cllr Peter Chegwyn said: "There is no place for anti-social behaviour in Gosport and we are committed to improving public safety.

"This extra funding has enabled the council to hire uniformed officers from Blayde Security to increase safety in Gosport town centre for 12 weeks, contributing to our aim of a safer, more welcoming borough."

Gosport was awarded £75,000 of the £750,000 funding allocated by the Police Commissioner to 11 councils to reduce anti-social behaviour (ASB).

Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones said: "The presence of uniformed ASB wardens has been proven to have a positive impact on reducing anti-social behaviour.

"These dedicated wardens will reduce the pressure on police officers responding to ASB, whilst working closely with neighbourhood policing teams to ensuring the extra police time is spent on responding to crimes in action."
