Older Persons Champion

Councillor John Beavis has volunteered to be Gosport's Older Persons Champion.

What is the role of an Older Persons Champion?

A key role of the Champion is the engagement with older people to establish a clear understanding of views, needs and aspirations. Councillor Beavis will work closely with the Gosport Older Persons Forum to ensure that an effective representation is being made on their behalf.

Other responsibilities include:

• promoting the consideration of older people in all aspects of the Council's work
• promoting the needs of older people to partner organisations
• promoting the positive image of older people in the Borough
• challenging age discrimination
• ensuring that issues of concern for older people are always considered in local planning and decision making

The appointment of Councillor Beavis as the Champion should ensure that the profile and 'voice' of older people is raised and that the issues that matter to older people in their communities become and remain a priority on the agendas of local decision makers.
