Private water supplies

A private water supply is in general terms, any water supply which is not provided by a water company such as Portsmouth Water.

Private water supplies can be obtained from a variety of sources including:

• wells
• boreholes
• springs
• rivers and streams
• lakes and ponds

Water that is supplied by Portsmouth Water that is then further distributed by another person is known as a 'private distribution network'.  Examples of private distribution networks are caravan sites, colleges, MOD sites and factories etc.

The Private Water Supplies Regulations 2009 came into force on 1^st January 2010 and require local authorities to monitor the quality of private water supplies to ensure compliance with the UK drinking water standards.
