Landlords/ Tenants - Empty and Unfurnished Property Charges

Tenants should be aware that if they move out of a property before the end of their tenancy agreement they will still be liable to pay council tax.   If they are in receipt of council tax support, then this will cease from the date they move out of the property and they will then have to pay the full council tax until the end of their tenancy agreement.  You may also have to pay council tax at your new property as well.

If a tenant surrenders the property back to the landlord before the end of the tenancy agreement they are STRONGLY advised to obtain written confirmation from the landlord that they have accepted the early surrender, The tenant should ensure that they retain this as proof in the event of a later dispute over the end date of the tenancy.

Where disputes in the dates of liability occur between landlords and tenants, the council will only accept the lease/tenancy agreement as proof or a letter accepting early surrender of the lease.
