What the Council is doing
Air Quality Review and Assessment
Part IV of the Environment Act 1995 places a statutory duty on local authorities to review and assess local air quality. Where pollution levels exceed our air quality strategy objective levels, we designate air quality management areas (AQMAs) to tackle it. The Borough does not have any designated Air Quality Management areas.
In keeping with the Act, we have submitted detailed historical air quality information reports to Defra since 1999. Since 2015, Gosport and Fareham Borough Councils, have submitted joint annual air quality reports to the Government.
Clean Air Day
On the 20th of June 2019 Gosport Borough Council joined hundreds of other Councils and over 2000 different organizations in becoming an official Clean Air Day Supporter and held a Clean Air Day event in the town centre. The display was focused on information on air quality in the local area and the wider topic of Air Quality.
Air Quality and Schools
We work closely with the Hampshire County Council Travel Planning Team in visiting schools and engaging with pupils across the Boroughs of Gosport and Fareham. We provide the Schools with diffusion tubes to compare the levels of nitrogen dioxide associated with vehicle exhausts at different locations around their school/college grounds. Teams of students are then asked to draft a clean air campaign plan that would promote active and sustainable travel.
So far, we have worked with the following Schools:
- Grange Junior School
- Alverstoke Junior School
- Elson Junior School
- Titchfield Primary School
- Hook-with-Warsash CofE Primary School
- Redlands Lane School
- Cams Hill School
- Crofton Anne Dale Junior School
- Crofton Hammond Infant School
- Crofton Secondary School
This year (2019) the Hampshire County Council Travel Planning Team has been working in partnership with district Environmental Health Departments in Basingstoke, Eastleigh, Fareham and Gosport, Havant, New Forest, Rushmoor and Southampton to run an air quality project in selected schools and colleges. The teams were given the incentive of winning a 'donutting' session for a team of 12 pupils for the best plans, kindly donated by Active Nation Aldershot and Active Nation Southampton.
Alverstoke Junior School was the winning team from South Hampshire and won the visit to the Alpine Snowsports Centre in Southampton. As part of our Clean Air Day the Alverstoke Juniors "Eco Team" who took part in the Campaign attend the Town Hall, where the Mayor awarded them with their prize.
