Restoration of Anns Hill Cemetery cremation garden to begin

Restoration work at Anns Hill Cemetery will soon start to improve the cremation garden for those visiting to remember loved ones.

The current grass surface of the cremation garden is uneven and difficult to maintain to a good standard. The project, led by Gosport Borough Council, will replace the surface with decorative stone chippings, improving the look of the garden and making it easier to maintain.

All memorials will be lifted and securely stored while the resurfacing takes place, before being professionally reinstated.

Gosport Borough Council Leader Cllr Peter Chegwyn said: "We have allocated funding so the cremation garden at Anns Hill Cemetery can be refurbished. Great care will be taken throughout to create a fitting place for people to come and remember their loved ones."

The council has employed an experienced memorial mason to work with its cemetery office and to carry out the safe lifting and reinstallation of the memorial stones.

All of the works will be carried out in a sympathetic manner, ensuring there's no disturbance to cremated remains.

The work is due to start on Monday 24 June and is expected to be completed within 15 working days. Access to the cremation garden will be restricted during the restoration to ensure the safety of the public.

All grave owners have been written to advising them about the work.
