Plans to turn former bus station into a welcoming gateway for Gosport

Following the opening of the new bus interchange, the old bus station in Gosport town centre is due to be demolished over the winter, as part of a bid to regenerate Gosport's waterfront.

A new bus interchange opens this week (Tuesday 8 October), built by Hampshire County Council on the site of the former taxi rank next to the Falkland Gardens. The new building provides a modern, bright and fresh arrival and departure point for people travelling on local bus services.

The old bus station site will be demolished before being turned into a new public space with food and drink facilities, aiming to better welcome people into the town centre.

Councillor Peter Chegwyn, Leader of Gosport Borough Council, said: "I'm delighted that the new bus interchange is complete, offering a bright and modern space for people travelling to and from Gosport town centre. The new bus route through South Cross St will also help bring more footfall to the heart of our high street."

He added: "As part of our plans to regenerate Gosport waterfront, we are progressing the redevelopment of the old bus station site. Our vision is that this will include a new People's Park - a high-quality public space with destinations like bistros and bars that make the most of the location and views. This will become an important gateway to our revitalised waterfront - both for residents to enjoy as well as for visitors arriving by ferry or bus."

Proposals for the cleared bus station site will form part of a separate planning application.
