Advice on becoming a private tenant
Private Rented Accommodation
The private sector provides a source of alternative accommodation for you and we can assist you in your search for a home. There is a leaflet available to help you think about what to look for, how to find accommodation, how it all works and how to pay for private rented accommodation. There is a leaflet available for details of local letting agents and private landlords. Please click here for the leaflet. This list is not exhaustive and you should also consider looking in local papers, shop windows, personal contact such as friends and family and the internet.
If you are likely to need help to pay your rent you will need to contact the local Housing Benefit Office to find out your local housing allowance rate. These rates are advertised at the local office or available on www.gosport.gov.uk.
If you wish to access private rented accommodation you are likely to require money up front for a damage guarantee and rent in advance before securing a tenancy. If you do not have the funds available you need to explore what other options you can obtain this money from.
You may be able to borrow the money from a relative or friend and repay it at the end of the tenancy if you receive the full amount back.
You could also seek to borrow the money from a bank or building society or if credit is a problem she could contact Portsmouth Savers on 023 9282 7980 or South Coast Money Line on 023 9282 6180.
Its also worth exploring whether you or a close family member have ever served in the armed forces as you could approach Ssafa Forces Help. The website is www.ssafa.org.uk or 023 9252 3401. You can also contact other service charities for financial assistance. The website is www.turn2us.org.uk or contact 0808 802 2000 to find out if there is a benevolent fund that could provide you with financial assistance.
If you are in receipt of benefits you may be able to secure a loan for a rent in advance. Further details can be obtained from your local Job Centre Plus or by logging on to www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk.
